THE World University Ranking


In 2017, Lodz University of Technology participated for the first time in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE WUR), one of the most recognized and respected university rankings worldwide, developed in cooperation with Thomson Reuters. The latest WUR 3.0 methodology considers 18 indicators grouped into five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry collaboration, and international outlook.
The number of Polish universities included in the ranking has steadily increased: 12 in 2018 and 2019, and 45 in the 2026 edition. Lodz University of Technology was ranked in the 1501+ range.

THE by Subject Rankings


In 2018, the university also participated for the first time in the THE by Subject Rankings in Business & Economics, Computer Science, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences, and has been included in subsequent editions every year since then.

THE University Impact Rankings


In 2021, Lodz University of Technology was ranked for the first time in the THE Impact Rankings, which evaluate universities’ activities in relation to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 
This year marks the university’s fifth appearance in this prestigious ranking. TUL is among the nine highest-ranked universities in Poland. Its highest ranking was for SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth (201-300 range), sharing second place nationally with Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences. 
The university was also ranked for SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being (1001-1500), SDG 5: Gender Equality (401-600), SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (401-600), SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities (401-600), and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (601-800).
The ranking featured 2,526 universities from 130 countries, with 25 from Poland.

QS World University Rankings


The QS World University Rankings are based on academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), faculty/student ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), and internationalization (10%). Academic and employer reputation is measured via surveys. In the latest QS WUR edition, 20 Polish HEIs were ranked. Lodz University of Technology was placed in the 1001–1200 range.
In 2025, the university was also ranked in QS by Subject in three disciplines: Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (401-450), Chemistry (601-700), and Materials Science (351-400).

QS WUR by Region – Europe University Rankings


The first edition of QS World University Rankings by Region: Europe was launched in 2023. This ranking allows a more detailed analysis of European universities using the same indicators as the global QS WUR. In the latest edition, 684 universities were ranked, including 32 from Poland. Lodz University of Technology was ranked 403rd in Europe and 14th in Poland.

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability


QS WUR Sustainability evaluates universities’ ability to address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges. The ranking considers external evidence of university engagement—from graduates’ impact on science and technology addressing climate issues to research supporting the 17 SDGs.
In the latest edition, over 2,000 universities were ranked, including 26 from Poland. TUL was ranked 381st in Europe and 1051-1060 globally. The ranking uses 53 indicators grouped into three areas: environmental impact, social impact, and governance.

ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)


ShanghaiRanking’s ARWU is one of the most recognized and prestigious global rankings. It is based on a relatively small number of indicators, including the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among alumni and staff, the number of highly cited researchers, and publication output. 
Each year, ARWU selects the top 1,000 universities from around 20,000 institutions worldwide. In the latest edition, only seven Polish universities were included.

ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS)


GRAS covers 57 disciplines. The latest edition includes 2,000 universities from about 100 countries, with top positions dominated by universities in the United States, followed by China and the United Kingdom.
In 2021, Lodz University of Technology was ranked in two subjects: Biotechnology (401-500) and Mechanical Engineering (301-400). In 2022, the university was ranked for the first time in Energy Science & Engineering (301-400), alongside only one other Polish university - AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow.
GRAS methodology is based on five criteria: number of publications in top-quartile journals by Impact Factor, citation impact measured by Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI), proportion of internationally co-authored publications, number of articles in top journals, and prestigious awards received by researchers in the selected disciplines.

The US News Best Global Universities Ranking is published by U.S. News & World Report, which develops global rankings and analyses across multiple fields. The 2025–2026 edition featured 2,251 leading institutions worldwide, including 48 from Poland. Rankings are based on 13 reputation and bibliometric indicators.
In the latest edition, TUL was ranked 22nd in Poland, 516th in Europe, and 1,555th globally. In subject rankings, the university was placed: Polymer Science – 185th, Engineering – 695th, Materials Science – 685th, Electrical & Electronics Engineering – 728th, Physics – 970th, Physical Chemistry – 678th, Chemistry – 727th.

The URAP ranking is based on six indicators that measure the quality, quantity, impact, and productivity of research, as well as international scientific collaboration: Article (21%), Citation (21%), Total Document (10%), Article Impact Total (18%), Citation Impact (15%), International Collaboration (15%). The ranking is published by the Informatics Institute at Middle East Technical University in Ankara. The 2024/2025 edition included 3,000 universities, including 53 Polish higher education institutions. Lodz University of Technology was ranked 17th in Poland and 1,131st worldwide.
TUL was also included in URAP subject rankings in the following categories: Biological Sciences (1,032nd), Chemical Engineering (516th), Chemical Sciences (522nd), Electrical & Electronics Engineering (688th), Energy & Fuels (382nd), Engineering (690th), Materials Engineering (456th), Mathematical Sciences (758th), Mechanical Engineering (472nd), Medical and Health Sciences (1,886th), Metallurgy Engineering (206th), Molecular Biology & Genetics (680th), Physical Sciences (694th), Polymer Science (194th, the only Polish university in this category), Technology (741st).

The Leiden Ranking Open Edition is a new edition of the Leiden Ranking, launched last year based on open data from the OpenAlex database. The ranking focuses exclusively on publication-related aspects, evaluating universities according to the following indicators: number of publications (P), citation impact (PP(top 1%, 5%, 10%, 50%)), international co-authorship (IC), open-access publications (OA), and collaboration with the industry (IP).
Compared to other rankings, CWTS Leiden uses more advanced bibliometric indicators, and the entire ranking is based solely on the research performance of universities. CWTS Leiden does not produce a single global ranking table based on overall results; it is up to the user to select the indicator they want to use for their classification. The multiple indicators used allow for generating various rankings.
The 2025 edition of the CWTS Leiden Ranking included 2,800 universities, including Lodz University of Technology, which ranked 896th worldwide and 247th in Poland.

CWUR is a consulting organization providing strategic analysis and advisory services to government bodies and universities. Its activities aim to improve the quality of education and research. The CWUR ranking has been published since 2012. The latest edition included the top 2,000 universities worldwide, among which 40 Polish institutions were ranked. Lodz University of Technology was placed 1,420th.
The ranking methodology considers seven indicators grouped into four areas: quality of education (25%), alumni employment (25%), faculty achievements (10%), and research performance (40%).

Webometrics is the largest global university ranking, including all universities, not only the best ones. It considers the online presence and visibility of universities. The goal of the ranking is to promote open access to information (including scientific publications) and to encourage universities and researchers to ensure their online presence reflects their actual activities. In the latest edition, Lodz University of Technology was ranked 2,297th worldwide.
The methodology includes three indicators: visibility/impact (how often other sites link to university content), transparency/openness (citations from the top 210 public university profiles, excluding the top 20), and excellence (participation in the most cited scientific publications). The ranking is published by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) based in Madrid. Founded in 1939, CSIC is the largest public research institution in Spain, under the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The ranking is updated twice a year, in January and July.

The SCImago Ranking lists universities, academic institutions, and private research organizations. The classification is primarily based on data from the Scopus database and it considers three groups of indicators: research performance (50%), innovation (30%), and societal impact (20%). The 2025 edition included 5,051 universities, including 70 Polish institutions. Lodz University of Technology was ranked 1,208th globally and 22nd nationally.
In 2021, SCImago introduced subject rankings. In the latest edition, TUL was ranked in 24 subjects. Notably, in Food Science, it was 1st in Poland and 184th globally (out of 2,011 universities). In Agricultural and Biological Sciences, it was also 1st in Poland and 359th worldwide (out of 3,118 universities). In Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology, the university ranked 4th in Poland and 691st worldwide (out of 3,095 universities).
